Nicholas LaRoche

Long before Nicholas LaRoche helped establish the US Athletic Foundation with his older sister Tricia, he found his comfort zone in an ice rink. Now he has the prestige of being a national champion and an international competitor.

LaRoche started skating after watching Kristi Yamaguchi win the gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games. By 1997, he made it to international competition, skating to a fourth and fifth place finish at the North American Challenge Skate events.

He made his national debut at the 1998 U.S. Championships. Skating in the novice division, LaRoche won the pewter medal. He finished second as a novice the following year then placed seventh in the junior competition three-times (1999-2001).

At the 2002 U.S. Championships, he established himself as one of the premier skaters in the nation by taking the gold medal in the junior men's competition. LaRoche finished 10th at the World Junior Championships.

Since 2003, he has competed at the senior level six times. He withdrew from the 2009 U.S. Championships but previously finished eighth (2003), 12th (2004), 8th (2005), 11th (2006) and 11th (2007).

LaRoche also represented the United States at several international competitions on both the junior and senior level including the Junior Grand Prix. He won the silver medal at 2007 Ondrej Nepela Memorial and bronze at 2003 Nebelhorn Trophy.

Among the shows he has skated in include An Evening with Champions, Legends on Ice and Stars Stripes and Skates.

Now LaRoche is turning some attention to coaching. He currently teaches at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, Calif., and Palos Verdes Ice Chalet in Rolling Hills.
